I am losing track of the days here, but it is noticeably getting close to the halfway point of my trip here in Beijing. Next week I have a lovely midterm, but afterwards there is a trip to the Great Wall!
Last week I got the chance to go to the Summer Palace and it was pretty damn cool. It was a step climb up to the top. It had some gorgeous views and buildings. At the foot the hill you can take a boat across the moat to the other side. You get some killer views that way too. It only cost 15 kuai per person to get across.
I applied for a part time job with a new company that does online tutoring and received a job offer. Yay! Its called KKTalkee.
I will essentially be webcamming with a bunch of international strangers to speak with them to practice their English. Judging from the company the market seems to mostly be Chinese folks, which means I can also practice my Chinese =). The best part is that it is completely mobile so I can do it anywhere as long as I have an internet connection. 12 bucks an hour would be enough for supplemental income while I am abroad (Luckily, a US dollar goes a long way in most places.)
This gives me a brilliant plan of couch surfing and visiting friends in Asia. While doing this online tutoring job. This tutoring job sets things up quite nicely. I have been toying around with LiveMocha to find people to practice Chinese , but with this job. I can funnel them into my tutoring job at KkTalkee. Double win!
In other news, I just finished my midterm and absolutely did not crush it, it was pretty decent. We are now officially halfway through the program, and It feels like it is going by way to fast. At least I got to see the Great Wall today! A couple of us essentially sprinted along the wall for about half the time we were there. We met a nice Chinese tourist family in one of the beacon towers and I they asked me to take pictures for them. Well technically I tried and failed at explaining that there were stairs inside the building, but we worked it out. Since we were obvious foreigners the had their 4 year old daughter speak as much English as they could with us!
That reminds me, THERE WAS SO MUCH ENGLISH AT THE GREAT WALL. All the vendors speak such good English it was disturbing. Also, I found out that you can not only bargain for souvenirs at the Great Wall you can also bargain for drinks . I got a drink that was originally priced at 10 yuan and bargained it down to 4 yuan. Which is still over priced, but better.
I also got to parkour my way around one of the towers. I guess those classes in DC were worth it! If you go to the Great Wall, I highly recommend you taking a toboggan ride back down the tower. It was 1 – 1.5 of steel slides. And you can go pretty damn fast, I almost fell of taking a sharp turn too fast. Someone in the group lost their hat.
I also, I climbed two small mountains. Fun stuff
