Sweet, I haven’t posted anything in two weeks. I figured out how to get pictures up! I had to look at my last post to remember what had happened and what to write about. Finally settled in and in the swing of classes, I ended up placed into intermediate level class, the placement test itself was a funny experience. I think they were supposed to ask me questions but I ended up ranting a lot during the test, thus they put me in intermediate. I learned a few things in the class and from talking to locals here
- My listening comprehension sucks incredibly so. I always end up saying请说一遍。And even then I do not understand the second time. Sometimes I cannot tell if it is because I do not understand what they are say, or I am just spacing out while they are talking and do not have an attention span. Possibly a combination of both.
- My accent is apparently incredibly Cantonese /Southern sounding, not completely sure why. Every single person I have spoken to in Chinese tells me this
- People get a kick it when I introduce my self, especially if they know anything about Chinese history. 黄学良(my name) is extremely close to 张学良. Evidently he is famous around Mainland China and regarded as a Hero. Taiwan has mixed feelings about him though. Either way, I just tell people I named myself after him when first started learning Chinese.
Food is incredibly cheap here. I pay about 6 RMB( about 1 USD) per meal at the canteens and eating out costs 40 RMB on the high end per person. Hotpot 火锅 is my new best friend here, we have a bitter sweet relationship though. On one hand my tummy is incredibly happy, on the other hand I smell like hot pot for the rest of the day if I go to early, and changing clothes is less of an option because of how little clothes I packed. Speaking of clothes I ripped my only pair of jeans, bummer.
On the tourist side of my trip here. I saw some pretty neat things. Went to Tiananmen Square, the (not so) Forbidden City. The Temple of Heaven has some nice views. Clubbing and Karaoke is a thing to do around here. Which gave me a thought… What if you made a whole lesson plan based on Karaoke songs. We could totally make an app out of it, I need to get R&D on this business.
